I’ve had lots of opportunity to use my stress management skills this week. Here in north Texas we’ve had 2 record snowfalls within one week.
Thursday afternoon, driving home in the snow, it took me an hour to make what should have been a 5 minute drive. With front wheel drive, I wasn’t having any trouble, but people in front of me were spinning out and there were wrecks everywhere.
Thank God for cell phones! I was able to call my 4th grader’s best friend’s Mom and have her pick him up. Otherwise he would have been waiting for me at the school for an hour!
So, which skills did I use?
- communicate - I called the school, my friend, and home during that hour to make sure no one was worried and everyone was taken care of
- ask for help - by asking Tammy to pick up Matthew, I relieved a lot of stress for both him and me
- patience - I got honked at several times because people behind me didn’t think I was moving fast enough, but I stayed patient and relaxed
- prayer - yes, it is a stress management tool!
- acceptance - we don’t get snow very often in Texas, but I didn’t waste any time thinking it “shouldn’t” be happening - just play it as it lays
